Recent licenses and collaborations

Rowett has a long history of licensing technology from its research. We have a robust approach to establishing and maintaining IP protection to help potential licensees optimise their due diligence procedures. Technologies currently available for licensing or for co-development can be found by clicking here (link).

There is no simple formula for licensing and the precise terms will depend on the technology and the company. Rowett prides itself on a flexible approach to licensing to assist early commercial development and would be pleased to discuss any opportunities in more detail. You can contact us by clicking here or via our contact page.

Below are some examples of licenses that have been concluded in recent years which illustrate the breadth of the technologies available.

Therapeutics

Alizyme plc (www.alizyme.com) Alizyme is a specialist developer of therapies for gut disorders, Obesity and Mucositis based in Cambridge. Alizyme is taking a new approach to the treatment of mucositis involving ATL-104, which it acquired from Rowett and which stimulates the growth of the cells lining the mouth and gastrointestinal tract ('the mucosa'). ATL-104 is a plant protein that is manufactured in a recombinant process and was selected for clinical development in order to ensure a consistent supply of product. During cancer treatments involving chemotherapy and radiotherapy, damage to the mucosa can result in mucositis, which is painful, can prevent eating and can cause diarrhoea, malnutrition and systemic infections. It can also limit the intensity of cancer treatment and affect the quality of life of between 15% and 40% patients. There is no drug currently available that can effectively prevent or treat mucositis. The Phase I and IIa clinical development programmes for ATL 104 have recently been successfully completed. In parallel to the technology agreement Rowett has continue to provide specialist expertise to support the preclinical development phase.

Diagnostics

Quidel Corporation (www.quidel.com) is a worldwide leader in developing, manufacturing and marketing point-of-care (POC) rapid diagnostic tests for the detection and management of a variety of medical conditions and illnesses based in San Diego. In the US the company leads the market in several POC product categories for sales through medical product distributors Their products aim to provide healthcare professionals with accurate and cost-effective diagnostic information at the POC and focus on women's and family health in areas including pregnancy, infectious diseases, general health screening, bone health and autoimmune disorders. Quidel now markets worldwide under a technology agreement the Metra®PYD and Metra®DPD kits developed originally at Rowett by Dr Simon Robins for measurement of collagen resorption.

Life Science Tools

Haptogen Limited (www.haptogen.com) is fast growing biopharmaceutical company, based in Aberdeen which in January 2006 was named as one of the top 10 new businesses in Scotland . It has unique antibody generation capabilities founded on a proprietary technology platform - Haptomics and is developing therapeutic antibodies against a range of novel drug targets beyond the reach of other immunotechnologies. As part of this it has developed it’s DNA Binding Domain Display Expression System (DBDx™) Technology based on technology developed at the Rowett and licensed to the company. DBDx™ has the ability of certain steroid hormone receptors to bind with high affinity and absolute specificity to particular single stranded DNA sequences. It differs from conventional phage display as presentation of proteins is achieved at the viral particle surface without the requirement for viral coat protein gene fusion or signal sequence to target expression to the phage surface. The DBDx™ system is more flexible and provides a more efficient system, increasing functional library sizes and displayed repertoire diversity.

Rowett science has also been licensed to each of our spin out companies and more details of these can be found by following the link
